Until the `70s, the film industry was one of the most profitable in the USSR. Though censored, it was a huge propaganda machine at the same time. Once part of a system fully subsidized by the state, the Moldovan film was left forsaken during the hard independence years. The "Moldova - Film" studio moved to self-financing and makes ends meet by renting out its film sets. Private studios do more advertising or short films and only occasionally shoot a co-production. Lacking films, former theaters were put up for privatization. Most theaters have already been sold on condition that the new owners would renovate the buildings and maintain their purpose. However, few of them have kept their promises... As a result, many old theaters are now in ruins or have been converted to more profitable businesses: shops, bars, sport clubs, wedding halls...
